OCDSB Students Impress at Hellenic History Competition, Take Home Grand Prize

Students from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s International Certificate Program recently demonstrated their great grasp of ancient and modern Greek history, claiming first place at the annual Hellenic History Competition in Montreal. The prestigious event brought together 13 teams from across Ontario and Quebec, including contenders from Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, and Ottawa.

The competition tested participants' knowledge of Greek history across a vast timeline, from 1500 BCE to the present day. After intense rounds of questioning, Team Seleucid Smackdown emerged victorious. The winning team comprised Galen Mueller and John Rootham from Glebe Collegiate Institute, along with Nicholas Papadopolous from Roberta Bondar Public School. Their dedication and extensive preparation paid off handsomely, as each member was awarded a $1000 prize and a plaque.

Two additional OCDSB teams showcased their dedication and historical prowess at the competition.

The Delta League team comprised Sofia Arrouch and Rasna Samra from West Carleton Secondary School, alongside Felicity Savoury from Cairine Wilson Secondary School.

The Socrates' Spanakopitas team featured Sarah Hiroha from South Carleton High School, Jenna Guerrero from Sir Robert Borden High School, and Jay Lewis from Canterbury High School.

Both teams' commitment to countless hours of study, delving into a wealth of historical facts and details, was evident throughout the competition.

The strong showing by these students was a testament to their individual efforts. Their participation also highlighted their role as excellent representatives of their schools, the International Certificate Program, and the OCDSB on a national stage.
