Expanding Horizons, Experiencing Culture: Schools Connect with Korean Cultural Centre

This spring, our District embraced a unique opportunity for global learning right here in Ottawa. The Ottawa-Carleton Education Network (OCENET) teamed up with the Korean Cultural Centre for an exciting school visit program. The Centre engaged with 10 schools, inviting 1,300 students to explore the rich heritage and contemporary vibrancy of Korean culture.
The elementary school visits provided a dynamic experience for our youngest learners to learn about basic greetings, geography and the global phenomena of K-pop and K-drama as part of the KCC's "Introduction to Korea" sessions.
A highlight was the Korean fan-making workshop, where students designed and decorated their own traditional fans, exploring their historical and cultural meaning. Representatives from the centre also led students through a hanbok experience, allowing them to try on this beautiful traditional clothing and learn about its significance in Korean culture.
Here’s a glimpse into the school visit at Robert Bateman Public School:
For high school students, the program offered field trips to the Korean Cultural Centre in downtown Ottawa. First, students delved into Korea's rich history and modern pop culture. This was followed by a guided gallery tour, prompting thoughtful discussions about the artwork on display at the centre. Students then designed personalized luggage tags inspired by the art they had explored.
The visits culminated in a highly anticipated Korean food tasting experience, providing an authentic culinary journey as students sampled traditional dishes and learned about their cultural context and ingredients.
Our sincere thanks go out to the Korean Cultural Centre for this exceptional partnership. Their dedication brought an invaluable experience directly to our schools, building a stronger sense of community and global awareness.
