North Gower Students' "Shop Local" Project Raises $4000 for Great Causes

The students of North Gower/Marlborough Public School demonstrated the power of community through their incredible "Shop Local" initiative. This project, spearheaded by the grade 4/5 classes, went far beyond the classroom walls, making a tangible difference for local businesses, the North Gower Food Bank and the school’s very own Rubber Duck Day Program.
The young entrepreneurs embarked on a mission to engage with community businesses. They met with business owners and learned about their operations and the vital role they play in the local economy. The students developed marketing plans and created posters, commercials and giveaways encouraging the community to visit these local establishments.
With guidance from teachers Leslie Mott and Christopher Rowsome, students transformed the eight participating businesses into an interactive adventure. They displayed signs with secret words at each location, giving visitors an opportunity to collect all the words in exchange for raffle tickets. Businesses generously donated items, forming the basis of the raffle. Each business also sold a “Rubber Duck Special” – an item with proceeds supporting the North Gower Food Bank and the Rubber Duck Day Program.
After months of hard work, it was time for the grand finale: the Shop Local Walking Tour! The entire school, together with families and guests, stopped by each of the participating businesses, where students proudly presented what they had learned. They also flexed their own entrepreneurial skills, selling products they’d made and plants they’d grown. The event culminated in a raffle draw and picnic.
Students reflected on the success of the walking tour:
“I was really nervous at the start, but at the end, when I realized what we’ve done together to work up to those big moments of the walking tour, it just felt really good.”
“I was really excited to do [my presentation]. After I did it, I was really glad and I think I showed a lot of improvement from last time.”
“At the start I was joyful – so happy. And at the end I felt very, very proud – I just accomplished something big. It took six months to prepare, and I completed it!”
The project wasn't just about raising money; it was an invaluable learning experience. Students gained skills in public speaking, advertising, scripting, coding, teamwork and problem-solving. They learned how to talk to adults and, most importantly, experienced the satisfaction of making a real difference in their community.
The impact was felt directly by local businesses, which saw a marked increase in foot traffic and great sales on the Rubber Duck Specials. On the day of the walking tour, one bakery happily reported more customers on a Tuesday than ever before!
The initiative successfully raised over $4,000, which will be split between the Rubber Duck Day Program and the North Gower Food Bank. The school’s Rubber Duck Day Program engages students in playful, hands-on learning through self-directed projects, collaborative activities and community service, ultimately improving attendance and student well-being.
This Shop Local initiative has profoundly impacted students, teaching them about community and the power of their actions. It shows how social responsibility and collaboration can create positive change in our communities.
