Pride Month: A Celebration of Belonging and Diversity

Pride Month: A Celebration of Belonging and Diversity

Across the OCDSB, June was filled with vibrant celebrations and meaningful learning as schools marked Pride Month. From colourful displays to community gatherings, these initiatives highlighted the District's commitment to creating inclusive environments where every student, staff member and family feels welcomed and supported.

Schools proudly flew the Pride flag, emphasizing that every individual is seen, heard and valued. Throughout the month, students and staff engaged in a variety of activities. School libraries curated informative displays, while hallways showcased student artwork celebrating diversity. Many schools organized events like BBQs, bake sales and button sales, fostering a sense of community and celebration.

One example of student-led initiatives was Ridgemont High School’s third annual Pride Picnic. Hosted by the school’s Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA), this lively event united hundreds of students and staff for a lunch hour filled with fun and connection. Guided by their motto, “Possibility Through Community,” the GSA successfully showcased the strong, supportive and affirming community they have cultivated at Ridgemont.

These activities are an important part of the OCDSB's commitment to human rights, equity and inclusion. Pride Month offers an opportunity to recognize and uplift the voices of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals – learning that continues throughout the school year. During this time, we delve into the achievements and histories of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, acknowledge the many challenges these communities continue to face, and reaffirm our support for all identities as we stand together against discrimination.

The success of these Pride Month initiatives is a testament to the dedication of students and staff in building a District where every individual feels a sense of belonging and can thrive.
