Woodroffe High School’s Woodshop Class Builds Homes for Local Wildlife

Students from Woodroffe High School's woodshop class are making a tangible difference for local wildlife, one nesting box at a time. The class completed a project to build 14 nesting boxes for the OCDSB’s MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre, significantly contributing to the Centre's growing bird habitat.
Last month, the students embarked on a field trip to MacSkimming to install their handcrafted creations. This initiative beautifully blends hands-on skill development with a commitment to environmental sustainability, demonstrating how practical trades can directly support local wildlife conservation efforts.
The carefully designed nesting boxes are tailored to attract a diverse array of bird and other wildlife species, including:
- American Kestrel
- Northern Flicker
- Great Crested Flycatcher
- Hooded Merganser
- Eastern Screech Owl
- Saw-whet Owl
- Wood Duck
- Tree Swallow
- House Wren
- Black-capped Chickadee
- Eastern Gray Tree Frog
- Eastern Bluebird
This project provides vital nesting and shelter opportunities for these species, fostering biodiversity within the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre. It's an inspiring example of how local schools are empowering students to use their skills for the betterment of the environment.
