Youth Philanthropy Initiative at West Carleton Secondary School empowers students to give back

The students of West Carleton Secondary School took the stage to make a difference in their community, marking the culmination of the school’s 12th annual Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI). This unique program, integrated into the Grade 10 Civics curriculum, empowers students to research and advocate for local charities, with the ultimate goal of securing a $5,000 donation for a cause they believe in.

This year's competition saw four finalists present compelling cases for their chosen organizations. Ultimately, it was Kenady Brown's passionate advocacy for ‘Operation Come Home’ that resonated with the judges. Her presentation highlighted the critical work of the charity, which provides essential support to youth aged 16-25 experiencing homelessness in Ottawa.

The $5,000 grant, provided by YPI, will directly support Operation Come Home's daily drop-in Resource Centre. This vital hub, open seven days a week, offers more than just a place to go. It provides hot meals, clothing, personal care products, and on-demand mental health support. The center also connects youth with life-changing programs that assist with family reunification, housing, employment, and education. With an average of 60 youth visiting the program daily, the donation will be put to immediate use, specifically covering the ‘hard costs’ of the center — things like fresh food, cutlery, and other daily necessities that keep the program running.

Over the past 12 years, West Carleton Secondary School's involvement in the YPI program has resulted in $60,000 in donations to local charities, demonstrating the power of young people to create tangible, positive change in their community.
