Important Update to Blue Bin Recycling Program
The local company that manages recyclable materials has discontinued plastics recycling services for institutions. This means that the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) can no longer accept blue bin materials such as plastic containers, bottles, and food packaging. Our black bin program for paper and cardboard will continue as before.
The majority of plastic waste in OCDSB schools and buildings comes from lunches. To help us manage these materials more effectively and support the OCDSB's commitment to Social Responsibility, families, students and staff are requested to adopt a ‘litterless/boomerang lunch’ approach - where waste is brought back home.
Did you know that reusing your containers is actually more effective than recycling them? The boomerang lunch program puts this idea into practice. The simple act of sending lunch containers back home helps us focus on a key environmental principle: reduce, reuse, and recycle. By reusing containers, we're taking the second and more impactful step toward reducing our environmental footprint.
This collaborative effort is crucial for our school community and helps us divert waste from landfills. Please note that this change does not affect residential recycling services.
We thank OCDSB families, students, staff and community partners for their understanding and cooperation.
